Leeds United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the 2018/19 Championship campaign following the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa as the club’s new manager earlier this month.
The former Argentina and Chile boss replaces Paul Heckingbottom in the Elland Road hotseat after the Englishman was relieved of his duties last month, having presided over just four wins from his 16 matches in charge. Nonetheless, there is much optimism among our resident Whites supporters following the arrival of 62-year-old Bielsa, with the Argentine a very highly rated coach and one that could finally take Leeds back to the Premier League.
As such, there are many excited and expectant Leeds fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking Gelson Martins with a move to Premier League side Everton.
And the Whites must seek to capitalise on these reports by making a move for £10.8 million-rated Toffees sensation Ademola Lookman (as per Transfermarkt), who is likely to suffer from the possible arrival of Sporting’s Martins.
Ultimately, the 20-year-old hasn’t quite been able to build upon a sensational start to life at Goodison Park, which saw the winger net within minutes of coming on for his debut in their 4-0 thumping of Manchester City back in January 2017.
However, just 23 further appearances have followed for the England Under-20 World Cup winner, to the point that he himself instigated a loan move to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the winter in a bid for the regular football needed to aid with his development.
And with five goals and four assists for the German outfit, it was certainly the right call, but it’s difficult to see Lookman commanding regular football under Marco Silva at Everton were Martins to join this summer, what with the likes of Yannick Bolasie and Theo Walcott already ahead of the 20-year-old in the pecking order.
And given Lookman’s desire to move on loan back in January, he may feel obliged to do so again, which is why Leeds simply must seek to pounce as they eye up a return to the Premier League.
Ultimately, the Whites once again fell away in the Championship last term despite a promising start, with that now two seasons in a row in which they have put themselves in position to go up, and failed to see the campaign out.
As such, it’s clear that depth is needed in all areas of the squad for Bielsa’s men to sustain a promotion challenge this time round, and there is no doubt that Lookman would provide that in the forward ranks given his impressive efforts in Germany last season.
Clearly, the 20-year-old is a supremely talented winger and one that is destined for big things in the future, but his present prospects at Everton look bleak. And there’s no doubt that he needs football to continue his progression and eventually fulfil his potential.
And with Leeds showing genuine ambition by luring Bielsa to Elland Road, they now must replicate that by making an equally-ambitious move for Everton’s Lookman.
