Leeds’ promotion charge in the Championship has got off to the perfect start under Marcelo Bielsa.
The Whites currently find themselves in a commanding position to finally secure promotion back to the Premier League.
However, after last season’s collapse, some will be hesitant to assume they’re definitely on their way back to the top flight, especially when the squad still has some problems.
Here are three that need solving before the end of 2019:
Patrick Bamford’s unpredictability
The 26-year-old striker has been inconsistent yet again this season, and that could be a problem for Leeds as they head into the business end of the season. Bamford scored four goals in his first five Championship games this season and then went 10 games without a goal. He then scored three in his next four outings, so getting the best out of Bamford could be key to their promotion bid.
How do you solve a problem like Nketiah? The 20-year-old striker arrived at Elland Road with expectations of excelling in the Championship, but that has failed to materialise. He’s yet to start a league game for Leeds and has played just 24 minutes since the start of November. Rumours have been rampant that Arsenal are set to recall their youngster and send him out on loan elsewhere to get him more minutes on the pitch rather than the bench. If Nketiah does depart Leeds this January, they will be light up front and may be forced into the transfer market to bolster their squad.
Organising January plans
With the uncertainty around Nketiah’s future at Leeds, contingency plans need to be in place regarding a replacement. A potential arrival could be Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster, a World Cup winner with England’s Under-17s. Liverpool would be open to letting Brewster leave (according to the Daily Star), as he’s only played two senior games for the Reds this season. Having strength in depth in all positions will be crucial for Bielsa, so he needs to start drawing up some ideas now.
