Patrick Bamford has struggled when it’s really mattered over the last couple of months. With that in mind, Marcelo Bielsa should take that as a sign to reignite Leeds’ interest in Mbaye Diagne.
Turkish outlet Milliyet (via Tribal Football) reported that Leeds and Wolves were interested in the Galatasaray centre-forward in January, but a move never materialised. If that was true, they should go back in for him in the summer.
The 27-year-old has scored an incredible 28 goals in 26 appearances this season in the Super Lig. That’s some record, and it proves he’s ready to take the step up to one of Europe’s top leagues. The size of Leeds as a club should be able to attract him whether they’re in the Premier League or not next season.
Bamford’s nine goals in 22 appearances this campaign isn’t too shabby, but the way he’s looked a shadow of himself recently when players needed to be counted should worry Bielsa. He can’t trust him to be his main man next season.
Diagne might not be proven in England but the ability to score goals is a natural talent and he clearly has that talent. It wouldn’t fade because he’s crossed a few borders. He’s rated at £6.8m on Transfermarkt and that’s not cheap, but he could be worth it if his goals mean promotion or staying in the Premier League next season.
Bamford has proved he can’t be trusted next term, so Bielsa needs to bring in someone new. It’d be hard to find a striker with a better record than Diagne so he should take the risk and bring him to Elland Road this summer.
