Ben White is expected to leave Leeds United and return to Brighton and Hove Albion after his loan spell finishes at the end of the season, according to The Athletic.
If the move happens, the Whites would have just two out-and-out central defenders when the 6 foot centre-half returns to the south coast in May (via Transfermarkt).
Should the 23-year-old return to Brighton as reported, it would leave a gaping hole at the back for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, both in terms of numbers and quality. Losing someone of his ability would be a cause for concern if the club is playing Premier League football next season as he has been in outstanding form this campaign, averaging more interceptions and clearances than any of Marcelo Bielsa’s men, showing how important he is to the side (via WhoScored).
As mentioned above, White leaving means Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi would be the only two recognised defenders at the heart of the defence. This would mean making signings is a must for the Yorkshire outfit, or they risk struggling like Norwich City, who have been hampered by a lack of central defenders this season.
Injuries to the likes of Timm Klose, Grant Hanley and Christoph Zimmermann have been problematic, forcing midfielder Alex Tettey to fill in at centre-half. It hasn’t been a successful ploy as the Canaries have conceded more goals than any other top-flight side (via Premier League).
Losing someone of White’s quality will be a huge blow for the Elland Road outfit if they do get promoted to the top-flight. Reinforcing will need to be made a priority as the Canaries have shown this campaign how badly you can struggle if you lack numbers at the back.
