Having just seen their side suffer a gut-wrenching play-off semi-final defeat to Derby County, it would be understandable if Leeds United fans were angry at their side for squandering the chance of securing promotion to the Premier League.
Yet despite the Whites’ inability to deal with the pressure of expectancy during the latter stages of the 2018/19 campaign, by going through this experience of failure, Marcelo Bielsa’s players should benefit from it over the coming years.
By keeping the nucleus of their squad together, there is no reason why Leeds cannot bounce back from this year’s disappointment next season.
However, if Bielsa decides to launch an overhaul of his squad and lets a number of his key players leave this summer, he could indirectly be putting a huge dent in the club’s hopes of promotion before the new campaign has even started.
Although the Argentine will be hopeful that he can persuade the likes of Kemar Roofe and Kalvin Phillips to prolong their stay in West Yorkshire, one man who could be calling time on his Elland Road career is Pontus Jansson.
Speaking to Football Insider about the Swedish defender’s future, former Leeds forward Noel Whelan admitted that: “I think Jansson will leave and possibly for around the £10million mark.
“I’m sure some Premier League clubs might take a chance on him, some of the lowers ones or the teams that have just gone up (Norwich and Sheffield United).”
If the Blades or the Canaries do indeed come calling for Jansson, it would not be at all surprising if he ends up leaving the Whites when the transfer window opens in July.
Having been one of the Leeds’ stand-out performers since joining the club on a permanent deal in 2017, the £5.4m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) is clearly ready to make the step up in level to the top-flight.
Although Bielsa will be reluctant to let the 28-year-old go, the decision may be taken out of his hands if Jansson expresses a desire to end his association with the Whites over the coming weeks.
What do you think Leeds fans? How big of a loss would it be if Jansson left this summer? Could your side achieve promotion without the defender next season? Let us know below.
