Leeds United: Bielsa’s side must not let up over pivotal Easter weekend

Leeds United: Bielsa’s side must not let up over pivotal Easter weekend - Leeds United

It would be understandable if Leeds United’s supporters were allowing themselves to get carried away at this stage of the season.

Since Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival last summer, the Whites have transformed from being the Championship’s nearly men to legitimate contenders for automatic promotion in just nine months.

With the club currently second in the Championship and three points ahead of nearest rivals Sheffield United, the dream of Premier League football could become a reality in May.

However, in order to get over the line, Bielsa must not let his side overlook their Good Friday opponents Wigan Athletic. Despite the fact that the Latics are fighting to avoid relegation to the third tier, they simply cannot be underestimated at Elland Road.

Last week’s 1-1 draw against league leaders Norwich City demonstrated the dangers that Paul Cook’s side can possess when they are at their very best and so it is imperative that Leeds replicate the same level of performance that saw them dominate Sheffield Wednesday on April 13th.

A third consecutive win in the second tier would allow the Whites to move one step closer to a top-two finish at the end of the season and would leave them needing to pick up just seven points from their remaining fixtures. However, if they drop points against Wigan, it could open the door for a Blades side who need no invitation to gatecrash the promotion party.

With Chris Wilder’s side having the luxury of playing first on Friday, they will be able to put pressure on Leeds by securing all three points in their clash with Nottingham Forest.

If this does occur, it is paramount that the Whites send a definitive message to United by beating the Latics in what could be a defining day in this year’s Championship season.
