Leeds United are looking to offload Gaetano Berardi at the end of the season, according to Football Insider.
The defender is coming to the end of his contract at the Yorkshire club and is not thought to be on the list of players who will be offered a new deal.
Should Leeds break the bank for Gayle?
That could well change if the club fail to secure promotion to the Premier League, according to Football Insider.
Berardi has been at the club since joining from Serie A side Sampdoria in 2014 for just £90k (via Transfermarkt).
Berardi has been a crucial cog in Marcelo Bielsa’s well-oiled machine since the Argentine joined the club in 2018. Despite suffering injury hell last season, Berardi returned to start both legs of the Yorkshire side’s play-off semi-final against Derby County last season, showing his importance to the side (via Transfermarkt).
He has been an influential figure for the club this campaign, averaging the third-most clearances and the least amount of fouls in the Leeds squad despite having played the least number of minutes of any centre-back (via WhoScored).
More important than his experience, the 31-year-old offers a range of versatility to the Championship side, having already played in four different positions this season, including every position across the defence.
Berardi offers both versatility and experience. If the club does gain promotion to the Premier League, his experience in Serie A means the club should do all they can to retain his services for next season.
Not only does his ability to play multiple positions boost squad depth massively, he is also a bit of a cult hero for his aggression and tough tackling, and you can’t have too many big characters in the squad when fighting for Premier League survival.
