Danny Higginbotham believes that midfielder Kalvin Phillips will be playing Premier League football in the 2020/21 season, whether Leeds United win promotion or not.
The 23-year-old is a key player for the Whites under manager Marcelo Bielsa and has helped them climb to third in the Championship table after 16 games (BBC Sport).
Leeds are one of the favourites to win promotion this season but, if they fail, then they will lose their star midfielder, according to the ex-Stoke City defender.
Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT about Phillips, Higginbotham said: “He’s an exceptional talent.
“It’s not just how well he defends the defenders but it’s his distribution. He’s a player who has matured unbelievably in the last couple of seasons.
“He will be in the Premier League next season with or without Leeds.”
There is no doubt that Higginbotham is correct when talking about how good a player Phillips is.
As already mentioned, he has been a key cog in the Leeds team this season, starting all 16 league matches and scoring the vital winner against Birmingham City in October (Transfermarkt).
Added to that, he is also averaging an impressive 3.9 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per game, which shows how good a job he does protecting the defence (via WhoScored).
Statistically, he has been Leeds’ best player this year with an average WhoScored rating of 7.41, which is higher than Ben White in second with 7.22.
With the way he is playing, it is very difficult to imagine him not playing top flight football next season. If Leeds do fail to win promotion, then it seems extremely likely that he will move on.
