Leeds United have set their sights on Rangers central defender Connor Goldson, according to Football Insider.
The publication is reporting that the Whites are looking to sign the 27-year-old either this month or in the summer. However, they aren’t the only club interested in the player with Fulham also eyeing up a transfer for Goldson.
It’s a transfer that comes amid growing concerns in the central defence position. The club currently have just three centre-back options (via Transfermarkt) and of the trio, Ben White is on a season-long loan and will return to Brighton and Hove Albion at the end of the season, while Gaetano Berardi is out of contract in the summer.
So, on the face of it, a potential move for Goldson would seem to be a smart acquisition for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. His form for the Glasgow giants shows that he can be a reliable option for the Yorkshire outfit if signed.
In the Europa League this campaign, Goldson has been one of the standout figures as he’s made a mammoth 6.5 clearances per game – the most out of Steven Gerrard’s side (via WhoScored).
His performances earlier this year earnt him praise from former Teddy Bears man Alan Hutton, who claimed that he’s shown every quality you’d want to see from a player ‘at the heart of the defence’.
Should the Elland Road side achieve promotion to the Premier League, they could well be in a whole heap of trouble at the centre of defence. As a result, early planning is crucial and Goldson has shown this season that he can be a useful option to make the difference for the Whites.
However, if he is signed in January, then it would only further strengthen a team that already holds the second-best defensive record in the Championship (via BBC).
