Sky Sports pundit David Prutton believes Leeds United will continue from where they left off following their dramatic comeback win against Millwall in midweek to get their promotion challenge back on track.
Prutton thinks that their 3-2 victory will represent something of a turning point – and that weekend opponents Wigan Athletic will be unable to recreate the result they managed last season, when they came from behind with 10 men to severely damage Leeds’ promotion hopes.
Making his predictions for Sky Sports, Prutton does not expect a repeat – backing Marcelo Bielsa’s side to make it two wins out of two ahead of a tricky-looking double-header against Nottingham Forest and Brentford away from home.
He said: “What a result that was for Leeds against Millwall! They have struggled for results lately and at 2-0 down you feared the worst, but they bounced back brilliantly and are now top of the table again! Wigan claimed a huge win themselves against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night but need to keep it going if they want to get out of trouble. They claimed a famous win at Elland Road last season, but I can’t see lightning striking twice.”
Prutton’s prediction may go with the momentum which is surely behind Leeds following their win on Tuesday night, though it had looked for a while that his forecast of a Millwall victory was about to come true.
In fact, the ex-Southampton midfielder had not seen Leeds turning their form around for a while having also backed them to drop points against the likes of QPR and Sheffield Wednesday in recent weeks.
With Leeds duly obliging, perhaps it was only a matter of time before they bucked the trend, proved Prutton wrong and got him back onside with a Whites victory back on the cards in front of their home fans this weekend.
While recent history may not be on Leeds’ side (and their overall form still looking fairly unimpressive), their performance against the Latics could be a sign of whether they are capable of making a full recovery having halted a run of one win in eight – and Prutton’s swing towards the Elland Road side could yet prove to be a positive sign.
