Leeds need to be consistent all through next season to be promoted, so they need to look for performers who can keep their standards high all year round. With that in mind, Dwight Gayle would give Leeds what Kemar Roofe hasn’t.
It was very typical of Leeds to falter in the final few months, but never have they looked so certain to win the division than they did before Christmas. If they’d have kept up that form, they’d have gone up in April, but the players let Marcelo Bielsa down.
Roofe scored an impressive 14 goals this season, but there weren’t enough goals and good performances towards the end of the season, when it really mattered. Dwight Gayle, on the other hand, kept his quality all season on loan at West Brom.
The 28-year-old bagged 23 goals this season and made eight assists, and those are numbers that came about through consistent performances throughout the campaign. Roofe would have had these stats too if he hadn’t shrunk like the rest of his team.
Bristol Live and the Birmingham Mail have linked Gayle with a move to Elland Road this summer (with former White Danny Mills also relaying to Football Insider that he believes the ex-Palace ace would be an ideal signing), and his ability to hold his form will be a trait that Bielsa holds dear. The Englishman would keep the Whites firing all the way over the line and into the Premier League next season.
He’s rated at £10.8m on Transfermarkt, so he won’t be cheap to lure away from Newcastle. Mike Ashley would surely be happy to broker a deal this summer, so Leeds need to get their cheque book out and prove how much they want this promotion.
