When Caleb Ekuban arrived at Elland Road in 2017, he would have been hoping to follow in the footsteps of Jermaine Beckford, Mark Viduka and Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink and become a hero at Leeds United.
Unfortunately for the Ghanian, this has not been the case whatsoever.
A slow start to life in West Yorkshire saw the forward fail to adapt to the pace and power of English football as despite making 20 appearances in the Championship, he only scored once in what was an incredibly disappointing campaign. Marcelo Bielsa’s appointment last summer saw Ekuban fall further down the pecking order at Leeds which eventually resulted in him being loaned out to Turkish side Trabzonspor.
Since making the move to the Super Lig, the 25-year-old has improved his output in-front of goal and has made a marked improvement in comparison to last season. Clearly enjoying his time in Eastern Europe, Ekuban has fired in eight goals for his new side who are on the verge of securing Europa League football for the 2019/20 campaign.
According to reports on Italian website TuttoMercatoWeb, the striker’s agent has confirmed that there is a deal in place for Trabzonspor to sign him on a permanent deal in the summer.
Although Ekuban has clearly developed as a player since moving to Turkey, Leeds fans shouldn’t be too concerned about the news of his possible departure. If the Whites do achieve automatic promotion in May, it is clear that the former Chievo Verona ace will not be up to the standard needed to thrive in the Premier League.
Therefore, by recuperating a fee for Ekuban, they could look to use the money to bolster the squad in specific positions where Bielsa will need to improve upon in the transfer window, regardless of what division his side find themselves in next year.
What do you think Leeds fans? Are you concerned about the news surrounding Ekuban and his departure? Or could it prove to be a blessing in disguise that he is leaving? Let us know below.
