Leeds United secured an important 1-0 win against Birmingham City at Elland Road on Saturday (via BBC Sport).

The Whites were frustrated for large parts of the game by a resilient Blues outfit, but ultimately managed to win all three points thanks to a goal from Kalvin Phillips after 65 minutes.

It was a result which lifted Marcelo Bielsa’s side to second place in the Championship table at the time of writing, two points behind leaders West Brom (BBC Sport).

Leeds were celebrating their 100th anniversary as a club this week (BBC News), so it was almost written in the stars that boyhood Whites fan Phillips would grab the winner on a day of celebrations.

The 23-year-old was outstanding on the afternoon. As well as his goal he also played two key passes, won four aerial duels, made seven successful tackles, three clearances and two interceptions in an all-action performance which saw him finish with a match rating of 8.65 (via WhoScored).

Phillips is a firm fans favourite at Leeds, and the supporters were quick to praise him for his match-winning display against Birmingham City with several of them agreeing that it was fitting that he scored on such a special day for the club.

Here is what some Whites fans said about Phillips on Twitter after the game…
