Responding to footage on Twitter, plenty of Leeds United fans have been gushing over the ‘underrated‘ trio of Gordon Strachan, Chris Fairclough and Ian Baird – looking back at their past landmarks during a 1-0 victory over Portsmouth at Elland Road in 1985.
Strachan, who went on to make 197 league starts for Leeds from the late 80s to mid-1990s (SoccerBase), made his club debut against Pompey along with fellow ex-favourite Fairclough. Baird, who amassed over 150 appearances during two separate spells himself, scored the winner against his former club that afternoon – with the occasion proving to be a landmark for the deadly former trio.
Reacting to archive footage of Baird’s winner against the South Coast side, many supporters have been in awe over the ‘exciting times‘ – as well as the ‘sheer class‘ nature of that goal which won the game for Leeds.

For me that’s the match that kicked off the Sgt Wilko era.

I remember Gordon hurrying the ball boy to give him the ball. When that goal went in, I new things had just changed.
