Leeds United: Helder Costa ‘skating on thin ice’ according to Noel Whelan

Leeds United winger Helder Costa could find himself on the bench after the international break, that is according to Noel Whelan.

The 25-year-old has only recently broken into the first team at Elland Road, and has started their last three Championship fixtures due to an injury to Pablo Hernandez.

However, the Wolves loanee hasn’t really grasped the opportunity with both hands and his performances have been somewhat disappointing. As a result, Whelan believes that if Hernandez if fit after the international break, Bielsa will put him straight back into the starting 11 at the expense of Costa.

Speaking to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds striker said: “Costa is skating on thin ice. He’s had one decent game and two poor ones. Away from home, he hasn’t turned up.

“It wasn’t the Helder Costa we have seen from the bench. He needs to think during the international break how he is going to make his game more consistent, and how he can shine away from home.

“If he doesn’t sort it out, he will quickly find himself back on the bench. After his performance against Millwall, I would expect Pablo Hernandez to come back into the team instead of him after the international break.”

Whelan certainly has a point. Quite simply, Costa has been waiting for his opportunity to start for Leeds for some time, but when his chance has arisen he has failed to take it.

Indeed, in the three starts he has made against Charlton Athletic, West Brom and Millwall respectively, he hasn’t provided a single goal or assist and his highest match rating from those three fixtures is a meagre 6.87 (via WhoScored).

Against Millwall he was hauled off at half-time as he wasn’t having any impact on the game. He failed to have a single shot at goal, didn’t make one key pass or complete one dribble whilst also having three unsuccessful touches (via WhoScored).

Performances like that will not cut the mustard for a promotion chasing team like Leeds, and with Hernandez expected to be fit after the international break it seems likely that Costa will return to the bench.
