According to a report from Football Insider, Leeds United have indicated in recent talks that they could activate their £5 million option to sign keeper Illan Meslier on a permanent deal – with manager Marcelo Bielsa praising the loanee as ‘calm’ and ‘confident’ back in early March (Yorkshire Evening Post).
Meslier, who stepped in before football’s suspension to replace the banned Kiko Casilla following his racism charge, has impressed Bielsa with his performances since being thrust into the first team. Even though the Frenchman has played just two league matches this season, he has managed to shut out the opposition on both occasions, most recently putting on a near faultless display away to Hull City in a 4-0 victory. The result, even despite Leeds’ headline-grabbing exploits going forward, prompted Bielsa to praise Meslier’s performance between the sticks – explaining how he was ‘calm’, ‘confident’and ‘took risks’.
Indeed, with Casilla’s future up in the air regarding his racial abuse of West Bromwich Albion winger Jonathan Leko, Meslier could be a smart option for a permanent deal based on his age, price tag and Bielsa’s past praise of the 20-year-old.
Keeping that in mind, United are planning to trigger Meslier’s £5 million clause as they potentially prepare for life in the Premier League should they gain promotion.
Would this Leeds team stay in the Premier League?
