Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes new signing Jean-Kevin Augustin will eventually claim a regular place in Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season.
Despite Nketiah’s lack of game time at Elland Road, Robinson told MOT Leeds News that once the Frenchman is up to speed with Bielsa’s physical and tactical demands, the 22-year-old will be starting week-in, week-out for the promotion-chasing Whites.
He said: “He hasn’t played much for Monaco this season, I think he’s started two league games. He’s scored one goal. He’s not got a great record this season and it might take him a bit of time to get up to fitness. I think it would take any player some time to get up to the fitness levels that Bielsa wants, what he demands. I can’t see him coming straight into the starting line-up, I think it will take him two or three weeks. [Ian] Poveda will come into the team. And I think it’s only a matter of time before we see Augustin starting every week for Leeds.”
Robinson could be right with Augustin having to work his way into Bielsa’s starting XI, with the manager hinting that he may not be considered to feature from the beginning at least when Leeds take on Wigan Athletic this weekend – something which the Elland Road faithful did not react particularly well to.
However, it appears a little curious that Robinson feels that Ian Poveda is ready to play for the team despite playing little more than 900 minutes of football all season (albeit at nearly double the amount that Augustin has been afforded). That said, Augustin nevertheless may have to prove his fitness given his lack of action this term.
Robinson’s claim suggests that he rates Augustin over Patrick Bamford (assuming Bielsa will continue to select one centre forward), and given the comparison between their top-flight records arguably favours the Frenchman – with the youngster far more experienced and prolific during spells in France and Germany – perhaps he will show himself in time to be Leeds’ most potent goalscoring threat.
