Daniel Chapman of the Yorkshire Evening Post has been lauding Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, suggesting that he can do things that Ben White struggles with.
The English duo have both played in midfield and defence this season (as shown on WhoScored), but Chapman believes while the former excels in both areas, the latter tends to struggle further up the pitch.
Speaking on the Square Ball podcast (18/02/2020), the Yorkshire Evening Post journalist said: “I think he [Phillips] showed [against Bristol City] what Ben White struggles with. Ben White is a very, very good central defender. But what Kalvin Phillips is is a very, very good central defender and central midfielder.”
Will Kalvin Phillips leave Leeds in 2020?
Wherever Phillips has played under Marcelo Bielsa, he has thrived. Last season, across 44 Championship appearances (including play-offs), his playing time came in the centre and at the back. He made 2.6 tackles per game, the most in the squad, and averaged 58.5 passes a match — only Pablo Hernandez (59.3) and Liam Cooper (67.4) performed better in that department.
Furthermore, you can see why Chapman has praised Phillips, with the 24-year-old proving himself as a very versatile asset.
