Speaking exclusively to Football Insider regarding Leeds United loanee Ben White, former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has suggested that the club need to snap up the ‘outstanding‘ youngster on a permanent deal.
White, who has started 37 games for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season, becoming a mainstay during their bid for promotion to the top flight before the coronavirus football suspension, is currently attracting praise from pundits and fans alike for his performances.
The Englishman, who is currently on loan at Leeds from Premier League outfit Brighton, is also attracting plaudits from ex-top flight striker Phillips – especially considering the pundit has been ‘blown away‘ by White’s performances this season. According to WhoScored.com, White has made the fifth most tackles on average out of the entire squad (1.7), beating the likes of Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi. Now, due to this fine form, Phillips has suggested that the club need to sign him permanently.
“Yes. He’s showed he’s very versatile, stepping into that Kalvin Phillips role when he’s been out,” Phillips explained to Football Insider when asked if the club should sign him.
“He’s obviously got a good football brain on him because he can play positions without a lot of time to work on them in the training ground.
“Week in and week out he seems to be getting better and better. I’ve been really impressed with his composure, coming out from the back, he looks very comfortable on the ball. He can run and he can defend when he needs too.
“Ben White seems to enjoy playing at Leeds, he seems very settled, and he’s been outstanding.”
Indeed, judging by his stats also, White has proven to be an integral part of this Leeds side – especially taking into account his versatility when deployed at either centre-back or centre-midfield. With that in mind, Phillips is right to call for his addition, however ambitious it may be considering the likes of Liverpool have been linked with him.
