Leeds United supporters may be rejoicing in the knowledge that Kemar Roofe is scheduled to return against Birmingham City yet it could be another player who could provide the momentum needed for the club to secure promotion.
Kiko Casilla’s red card against Sheffield United at the end of the March saw him receive a one-match ban which forced manager Marcelo Bielsa to start Bailey Peacock-Farrell in goal against Millwall.
Although the Whites secured a dramatic victory over the Lions, the absence of their Spanish ‘keeper saw them concede twice at Elland Road which would have been a concern for the club’s fans. If it wasn’t for Pablo Hernandez’s heroics, Leeds could have easily dropped points last Saturday and they will have to up their performance if they are to defeat Birmingham City at the weekend.
Casilla, who is valued at £2.7 million (by Transfermarkt), should return for the clash as he has been incredibly impressive in the early stages of his Whites career. In the 10 games that he has played for the club, the 32-year-old has conceded just nine goals whilst his sending off against the Blades was necessarily as it prevented Billy Sharp from completely killing off the game. Whereas Peacock-Farrell has had shaky spells throughout the season, Casilla’s previous experience of lifting major trophies at Los Blancos could benefit Leeds significantly in the run-in as he has been in a similar position before in his career.
With Bielsa’s side currently second in the Championship standings and two points clear of Sheffield United, they are in a great position to secure a return to the Premier League. However, to achieve this, they will have to overcome the likes of Preston North End and Aston Villa in the coming weeks.
Although it is clear that they have a squad that are more than capable of ending the season in a rich vein of form, the Whites simply cannot afford any slip-ups in what is turning out to be a fascinating race for promotion in the second tier.
