Former Leeds United frontman Noel Whelan believes this could be the transfer window the Whites finally sign Matej Vydra, tipping the club to move for a striker who will ‘make a difference’.
The Elland Road outfit were linked with moves for the 27-year-old in 2018 and 2019, however, failed to sign him on both occasions. Burnley snapped him up, ahead of Leeds, for £11m back in the summer of 2018, however, has only started the Carabao Cup defeat at home to Sunderland so far during this campaign.
It seems Whelan is optimistic a move for the player can be completed this winter as he pointed out the need for Marcelo Bielsa’s side to sign a forward.
He said: “Well possibly. We keep hearing Vydra every season, it’s been three years now, we’ve been talking about Vydra.”
“Listen Leeds will be linked to strikers due to their situation, so we need to fill those bases and we need to fill them with players who’ll make a difference.” (Source: Football Insider)
Given Vydra’s struggles to break into the starting XI for the Burnley since his move to Turf Moor, you have to go all the way back to the 2017/2018 season to get an idea of what sort of attacking quality he would provide for the promotion-chasers.
However, if he is to produce even half of what he did for Derby County that year, the Whites could well be celebrating Premier League promotion come May.
An eye-opening 21 goals in just 35 Championship starts greatly shows how Vydra can thrive in the right attacking set-up (via WhoScored). However, he wasn’t just limited to his goals as he also proved to be a nightmare for opposition defences, having been fouled 1.5 times per league game.
Vydra hasn’t played much football over the last two seasons, however, 87 goal contributions in over 180 league games in the second-tier suggests that he can help Leeds finally achieve promotion this year.
