Former Leeds United man Noel Whelan has claimed that Ben White is better than Liverpool centre-half Joe Gomez.
The player has been fairly impressive whilst on loan at the Yorkshire club, so much so Football Insider are reporting interest from the Reds in the Brighton and Hove Albion man.
Is Ben White good enough for England?
Whelan reckons that White has surpassed the former Charlton Athletic man, who won the Champions League with the Merseysiders last season.
He told Football Insider: “Ben White is good enough for Liverpool, in my opinion, he is better than Joe Gomez.”
“There is no doubt Ben White will be an England international sooner rather than later. It’s incredible to think he’d never played in the Premier League or Championship before this season but, deary me, he is brilliant. I’ve seen him every game this season and he’s the best centre-back I’ve seen at Leeds since Rio Ferdinand.” (Source: Football Insider)
The claim from Whelan is hard to judge when you compare and contrast the two players.
Prior to a serious ankle injury last season, Gomez was partnering Virgil van Dijk in the centre of Liverpool’s defence. He contributed to an incredible run of form that saw the north-west club go 14 games unbeaten at the start of the Premier League campaign.
After suffering the injury, Gomez hasn’t really received a regular run in the first XI from Jurgen Klopp, thus making it hard to judge the quality the defender possesses right now in comparison to White.
However, take nothing away from White, who has performed valiantly for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. The side has conceded just 10 goals in their 19 games this season, at an average lower than any team in the top five leagues in Europe and in the top four tiers in England (via LUFCData).
Comparing and contrasting the two players is difficult. White is playing regular football and impressing. Meanwhile, the £31.5m-rated, as per Transfermarkt, Gomez did impress when he was given a regular starting role and isn’t being given that opportunity right now.
