Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan isn’t expecting to see much from Jean-Kevin Augustin at the West Yorkshire club between now and the end of the season.
The Frenchman joined the Whites on loan from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig in the January transfer window, but has failed to make any sort of impact at Elland Road so far. Indeed he has managed to feature just three times for the club totalling 48 minutes on the pitch (Transfermarkt).
He has missed their last three Championship matches with a hamstring injury (Examiner) and as a result of that, Whelan believes that he will struggle to make any sort of contribution for the club during the run-in.
Speaking about the 22-year-old, the ex-striker told Football Insider: “You’ve got Augustin who’s a week, maybe two away with a hamstring injury. He’s never been fit since he came to Leeds so it doesn’t surprise me that he’s injured – I said it all along, if you push him too hard.
“He was the wrong signing at the time, he really was. He wasn’t going to contribute too much to us because the other players have gone through eight to ten weeks of pre-season.
“What will we see of him? He’ll have to start again because his match fitness is going to go back down again now he’s been injured for two or three weeks. We’re not going to see the best of him and I very much doubt he’s going to contribute that much, quite honestly.”
It is difficult to disagree with Whelan on this one. Augustin’s fitness problems have stopped him making an impact at Elland Road and with only nine games left there isn’t really much time for him to contribute.
Added to that, he is likely to be third in the pecking order when it comes to strikers now too. Patrick Bamford is undoubtedly Marcelo Bielsa’s first choice having started in 35 of their 37 Championship fixtures (Transfermarkt), whilst Tyler Roberts is likely to be second in line having netted an impressive brace against Hull City recently (Transfermarkt).
It is therefore difficult to see the former Monaco man getting many minutes going forward and in truth it is probably a January signing that Leeds didn’t need to make.
