Leeds United: Noel Whelan says Whites would win the Championship if they had Aleksandar Mitrovic

Noel Whelan believes that his former club Leeds United would storm the Championship if they had Aleksandar Mitrovic in their team.

The Whites currently sit in third place after 16 games, but although it has been an excellent start to the season for Marcelo Bielsa’s side they have struggled to score goals at times.

Indeed they have netted just 21 goals so far, which makes them the joint second-lowest scorers in the top 12 as things stand (BBC Sport).

Whelan believes that if Leeds had a more prolific striker within their ranks such as Mitrovic, then they would comfortably win the Championship.

Speaking about the striking situation at Elland Road, Whelan told Football Insider: “Leeds need another centre-forward in January, two isn’t enough. Who would I most like from the league? If we had Mitrovic at Leeds we would romp the Championship.

“Seriously. He’s that good. He ticks every box for a striker at Championship level – big, powerful, committed, great in the air and on the deck, excellent finisher, a massive threat in and around the box.

“I wouldn’t expect us to sign him from Fulham but it would be brilliant if we did.”

It is hard to argue with Whelan on this one. Mitrovic would certainly improve Leeds United as he is arguably the most prolific striker playing in the Championship.

Indeed he is currently the leading goalscorer in the league having netted 12 times so far (BBC Sport), which is seven more than Leeds’ first-choice striker Patrick Bamford has managed (Transfermarkt).

When you take into account the fact that Leeds average 16.4 shots on goal per game (WhoScored) which is more than any other Championship club, you have to think that Mitrovic would score plenty playing in that team and waste fewer chances than Bamford.

But as Whelan says, it is extremely unlikely that this deal would happen. For a start, Fulham surely wouldn’t sell to a promotion rival and he would surely be out of Leeds’ price range, particularly as the Serbian signed a new contract at Craven Cottage in July (BBC Sport).

Leeds fans, do you agree with Noel Whelan that you would “romp” the Championship if Aleksandar Mitrovic played for you? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
