Speaking exclusively to Football Insider regarding Leeds United’s goalkeeping situation, former Whites striker Noel Whelan has hinted that the club need to sign a ‘better goalkeeper than Casilla‘ if they were to achieve promotion this season – going on to suggest that current stand-in Illan Meslier just won’t be enough.
Meslier, who has impressed the pundit since replacing the suspended Casilla following his racial abuse of West Bromwich Albion winger Jonathan Leko, could join Leeds on a permanent deal worth £5 million after Football Insider also revealed that the club are in advanced talks with parent club Lorient to activate his release clause. However, according to Whelan, if Marcelo Bielsa’s side were to achieve promotion, Meslier’s presence wouldn’t be enough to keep them in the Premier League – with the ex-Leeds hit man going on to state that that they will need to sign a ‘better goalkeeper than Casilla‘.
“He has done OK but I think we need to sign a better goalkeeper than Casilla. I think we need to go in and try and find somebody that is going to be more consistent,” claimed Whelan when asked about the 20-year-old shot stopper.
“Casilla might end up being number two, not a bad number two to have quite frankly. Keep Meslier at the club as one for the future but once you have had a taste of first-team football you want it every single week. It is whether he would be happy to be third-choice.
“If we get promoted we need to improve the spine of the side, it is an absolute must. You need quality through that spine and if you have not got that you are going to struggle. It is worth the money, getting a great goalkeeper.”
Indeed, if Bielsa’s side were to climb back into the top flight, it could be argued that someone with more experience would be beneficial between the sticks – with this goalkeeping conundrum potentially being the focus of Leeds’ next big transfer move judging by Whelan’s verdict.
