Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has played down the club’s chances of bringing Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson to Elland Road in the January transfer window.
The Whites do not have many options in defence, with three senior centre-backs currently at the club, while Marcelo Bielsa has occasionally selected to play with three central defenders this season. Despite lacking depth and reports of a possible approach to the Glasgow giants for Goldson, Robinson told MOT Leeds News that he cannot see his former team pulling it off in January.
He said: “With Ben White, Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi, they’ve handled the defence very well this season. White has been outstanding, possibly the player of the year. And then there’s the idea of doing a deal with Rangers in January. I don’t think there’s any chance of that. They’ve got the chance to win the league for the first time in years and I can’t see Steven Gerrard being willing to weaken his squad.”
Do Leeds need signings to win promotion?
While it appears clear that Leeds could certainly do with another centre-back, Goldson’s exploits with Rangers in Scotland and in Europe could easily make the 27-year-old unattainable this winter. Goldson has played every minute of Rangers’ Scottish Premiership campaign so far, while he has also been an ever-present in the Europa League, which resumes in February.
That doesn’t exactly bode well in terms of successfully prising the Englishman away from the Scottish high-flyers, so Robinson is probably right to question the chances of Leeds adding to their defensive ranks with Goldson.
However, it looks as though Robinson holds a great deal of confidence over Leeds’ current centre-backs, though they would perhaps do well to steer clear of injury and suspension at the business end of the season if the club are unable to provide some backup in the next week or so.
