Paul Robinson has admitted the depth of Leeds United’s squad concerns him and believes the club could be in trouble if they were to suffer from injuries in the current campaign.
The former Whites goalkeeper highlighted the centre-back position as the focal point of his argument and stated that he felt the Elland Road outfit would be in trouble if either Ben White or Liam Cooper were to have to spend time out of the first-team.
Speaking to Sky Sports News (via The Boot Room), Robinson said: “
Indeed, the comments made by the former shot-stopper are not too hard to agree with as there would be a huge amount of concern if either one of the duo mentioned were to be missing at any point of the season.
Leeds have had terrible luck with injuries throughout Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure at Elland Road – The Yorkshire Evening Post noted that the club had to deal with 31 separate injuries in 2018/19 – and if that were to happen again, it could be just as disastrous as it was last season as they failed to win promotion to the Premier League.
Apart from White and Cooper, the Whites only have Conor Shaughnessy and Gaetano Berardi as the more established options, whilst Pascal Struijk could be promoted from Carlos Corberan’s Developmental squad.
As Robinson mentioned, both Cooper and White have been formidable together in the centre of defence and their stats, according to WhoScored, will have certainly helped to back up that statement.
White, who is on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion this season, has managed to average 2.7 tackles, 2.3 interceptions and 2.7 clearances per game, whilst Cooper has an average of one tackle, 1.3 interceptions and 4.7 clearances every 90 minutes across three Championship appearances each.
Hopefully, Leeds will not have to lose either one of those men to injury this season, otherwise their chances of reaching the top-flight could take a massive hit.
