It has been an awful month to be a Leeds United supporter, hasn’t it?
After seeing their side clinch a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on April 13th, the Elland Road faithful must have been extremely confident that their side would be able to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.
However, with the pressure proving too much for the Whites to deal with, they failed to win any of their remaining four fixtures in the Championship which allowed Sheffield United to overtake them in the standings.
With Marcelo Bielsa’s side looking to bounce back from this disappointment by successfully navigating their way through the play-offs, they knew that they had to be on top-form to defeat Derby County over two legs.
Although they managed to secure a fantastic 1-0 victory at Pride Park last Saturday, Leeds’ capitulation on Wednesday saw their dreams of a first top-flight campaign in 15 years shattered by the Rams.
Whereas Kiko Casilla, Patrick Bamford and Liam Cooper all delivered disastrous individual performances, Kalvin Phillips was one of the few positive on a harrowing night as he once again impressive for the Whites.
A regular throughout the 2018/19 campaign, the midfielder has managed to take his game to new heights under the guidance of Bielsa and is clearly ready to make the step up in level next season.
Yet with Leeds facing another year in the Championship, Phillips may have to leave Elland Road in order to fulfil his potential as a player.
Undeniably talented, it would not be at all surprising if the £6.3m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) is subject of considerable interest from a host of Premier League sides (having already been linked with Southampton and Bournemouth) which could force him to make a tough decision in regards to his future.
A graduate of the Whites’ academy, Phillips may find it hard to say goodbye to Elland Road but with there being no guarantees that the club can achieve promotion next season, the last thing that he will want is to see his career stagnate over the coming years.
What do you think Leeds fans? Will Phillips still be at your club next season? How impressed have you been with the midfielder’s development over the last year? Let us know below.
