Leeds United’s season ended in despair in midweek as they saw Derby overturn a deficit at Elland Road.
The Whites will be kicking themselves really for throwing away that lead, but it was something that is almost synonymous with their entire season, in that when the pressure has been on the club has failed to produce and get the results needed to kick on.
Marcelo Bielsa should still however be applauded for the job he has done at Elland Road, taking a team which was nowhere near achieving anything last season to within just a few wins of winning automatic promotion back to the Premier League.
And with Bielsa’s future up in the air, we here in the Tavern feel that the Whites need to do all they can do secure Bielsa’s future, or risk dropping back into old habits and having nothing to fight for next season.
Bielsa has got the maximum out of the likes of Kalvin Phillips, turning the 23-year-old into one of the finest defensive midfield players in the Championship, while converting Stuart Dallas from an attacking midfielder into a steady left back.
This sort of achievement is something which should not be overlooked, and while Leeds will of course go again if Bielsa does leave, it’s hard to see them doing quite as well under a different manager.
Similarly, Leeds now have plenty of assets within the squad like Phillips, Kemar Roofe, and Jack Clarke, players who might well seek moves away from Elland Road if they see Bielsa walk away from the job.
It’s a big summer, and a testing time for the Whites, but if Bielsa can stay put, then the club’s fans can once again look forward to another fine campaign next term.
