Kalvin Phillips has had a fantastic season for Leeds United, hasn’t he Whites fans?
After several years of mixed success at Elland Road, it is safe to say that the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa last summer has helped to transform the midfielder’s fortunes. Benefiting from the Argentine’s guidance, the 23-year-old has developed into one of the club’s most important players as whenever he hasn’t featured for Leeds, they have struggled to cope.
Therefore, when you consider that Phillips clearly has the potential to play at a higher level than the Championship, it is of no surprise that AFC Bournemouth have been linked with a potential swoop for the ace. According to Football Insider, the Cherries are reportedly interested in bringing the Leeds academy product to the Vitality Stadium alongside his team-mate Jack Clarke in a £25m deal.
Any possible departure for Phillips could depend on whether the Whites are able to secure a deal to bring in Mohamed Diame from Newcastle. According to Leeds Live (as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post), Bielsa’s side are believed to be amongst the front-runners to sign the former Senegal international ace on a free transfer in the summer with his current deal at St. James’ Park set to run out next month.
A powerhouse of a central midfielder, Diame has demonstrated that he has more than enough talent and guile to compete at both Premier League and Championship level and therefore would be a good signing to make for Leeds, regardless on the outcome of their season.
However, if he is brought in as a direct replacement for Phillips, it could be argued that the club would be taking a considerable step backwards in their goal of achieving long-term success.
Whereas at the age of 31, Diame is edging towards the twilight of his career, his midfield counterpart has his entire future ahead of him and could become a cult hero at Elland Road if given the chance to do so over the coming years.
What do you think Leeds fans? Should Bielsa sign Diame in the summer if it means letting Phillips leave the club? Or is it too much of a risk to take given the midfielder’s age? Let us know below.
