When Alex Mowatt left Leeds United to join Barnsley in 2017, it was not surprising whatsoever that the majority of club’s fan-base were bemused at the decision to sell him.
A graduate from the Whites’ youth academy, the 24-year-old seemingly had all the ingredients needed to become a modern-day Elland Road hero.
After bursting onto the scene as a teenager in 2013, Mowatt quickly established himself as regular for the club and was one of the only shining lights in a disappointing season for the Yorkshire-based outfit as they finished 15th in the Championship.
Although they would not improve on their league position in the following campaign, the midfielder had an outstanding year as he scored a number of incredible goals for the Whites. Mowatt’s superb level of consistency saw him Player of the Year in 2015 (via Leeds’ official website) yet unfortunately a change in management ultimately led to his downfall.
With Garry Monk taking over at Leeds, the midfielder was left out of his long-term plans and so decided to make the switch to Barnsley in order to guarantee first-team football.
Despite making a slow start to his career with the Tykes, the arrival of Daniel Stendel at Oakwell last summer has allowed him to thrive in the third tier as his eight goals and seven assists has took the club to the brink of securing automatic promotion.
Arguably enjoying the best season of his career to date, Mowatt was awarded for his fantastic performances on Monday by Barnsley as he was named the club’s Player of the Year.
After the news was announced last night, these Leeds fans expressed their opinions on the midfielder’s success on Twitter.
We shouldn’t have let you go that’s for sure, well done #lufc .

Mowatt will be hoping that he can fire the Tykes to victory against Bristol Rovers on Saturday. Three points for Stendel’s side will guarantee an immediate return to the Championship following last season’s relegation.
