Leeds United: Whites interested in Ben Gibson

Leeds United are thought to be interested in signing Ben Gibson this summer, according to a report by The Northern Echo.

It is understood the Whites would be keen on bringing the Burnley defender to Elland Road if he were available for the right price.

However, the Championship outfit could have their work cut out for him if he were considered a good acquisition as the likes of Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Sheffield United, Norwich City and Middlesbrough all credited with an interest in the 26-year-old.

Gibson certainly made a name for himself a few years ago as he provided Middlesbrough with some exceptional performances, as it attracted the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City and led to a £30million transfer fee being slapped on his head (Express).

However, 12 months later and a new club, things really have not gone to plan for the centre-back. According to the BBC, Burnley equalled their club-record transfer to sign the defender for a fee of £15m; but he has since made just five appearances for Sean Dyche’s side across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Leeds could be an ideal place for him to restart his career as Marcelo Bielsa is desperate to add defensive cover to his side. Pontus Jansson has already left the club after completing a move to Championship rivals Brentford, leaving just Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi as their most senior options.

Gibson managed to make an average of 0.7 tackles and 1 interception in his 47 appearances for Boro in the season prior to joining Burnley, whereas he also averaged 1.1 tackles and 2.5 interceptions back in the 2015/16 campaign (WhoScored).

With just Cooper and Berardi as their main recognised centre-back options, Leeds should ideally look to make an addition to their backline and Gibson could be a quality individual to bring into the side ahead of the upcoming campaign.

However, whether Burnley value him at a price that the Whites find acceptable remains to be seen, whilst whether the 26-year-old would be willing to drop down a division amid interest from other Premier League outfits is also something that could go against Bielsa’s chances.
