Leeds United have been struck with a blow in the forward department after a young striker was ruled out for two months.
According to BBC journalist Adam Pope, Ryan Edmondson has been ruled out for the next couple of months after he had surgery on a knee injury.
It’s crucial to note that Edmondson has yet to make a senior appearance this campaign but Marcelo Bielsa did say last month that he has been monitoring the forward. The news of his injury is not what the former Marseille manager would want to have heard especially after what he’s witnessed over the last few months. Indeed, finishing and fitness issues have been a massive difficulty for the Yorkshire outfit this season.
Tyler Roberts has endured a frustrating time with a hamstring issue and has played just two games since the end of November. Meanwhile, Patrick Bamford has been on and off with his finishing in front of goal, possessing the lowest xG differential of the division’s top 33 goalscorers this campaign (via LUFC Data), while Jean-Kevin Augustin is set to be eased into the side at Elland Road with the Argentine manager confirming he will have to adapt to Leeds’ style of play (via Phil Hay).
The club’s form doesn’t help matters, with the team having won just two of their last six games across all competitions (via WhoScored). This has left the club with just a three-point gap to Fulham, reduced from 10 which they held after their draw at home to Cardiff City last December.
It would be pretty foolish to assume Bamford will suddenly resolve his finishing issues, Roberts will suddenly spring to life after numerous games on the sideline or that Augustin will adapt quicker than needed. With that in mind, options are a must for the side moving forward this season and Edmondson’s injury is a bigger issue than it may seem.
With crucial games against Nottingham Forest and Brentford coming up, Leeds can ill-afford another slip-up in the race for Premier League promotion.
