With Samu Saiz looking to be heading towards the Leeds exit door in summer, they clearly need a new number 10. So, the man once dubbed ‘the next Gerrard’ (reported in their extensive round-up of failed Manchester United products by HITC), can be just the man for the job.
With Leeds unsure of whether they’re going up or staying in the Championship next season, it’s hard to plan for the summer window. It looks like they are doing though, with Football Insider 247 claiming they’re after Wigan’s Nick Powell.
The 25-year-old has played 23 times in the Championship, scoring five and assisting six in what’s been an impressive season at the DW Stadium for him considering his team are nearing relegation back to League 1.
The size of Leeds as a club and the fact they’re now playing attacking, fast-paced football under Marcelo Bielsa will be attractive to the creative midfielder whether the Whites are promoted or not. It’s a big step up from Wigan, a rugby league town at heart.
He was once labelled ‘the next Gerrard’ as he came through the ranks at Manchester United, but he failed to live up to expectations. He’s since proved himself back at Crewe Alexander, but a number of unsuccessful loans spell meant he was released and snapped up by Wigan.
His career is looking back up though and Leeds should take advantage of his contract ending in summer to see if they can integrate him into a system that gives players like him all the opportunity to shine and prove their worth.
The free transfer would mean there’s little risk in the signing and there’d be less expectation for him to perform immediately. For Bielsa, it seems like the more attacking midfielders the better.
Leeds fans, how do you think Nick Powell would cope with the step up to your club? Join the discussion by commenting below.
