The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has said that an ‘unnamed’ Premier League goalkeeper has emerged as a transfer target for Leeds United.
One of the areas in which Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa will be keen to address this summer is between the sticks, having seen Kiko Casilla suffer indifferent form this season as well as being given an eight-match ban for racially abusing Charlton Athletic striker Jonathan Leko.
The Spaniard has been linked with a return to La Liga of late, whilst young stopper Illan Meslier is expected to return to Ligue 2 side Lorient this summer following his loan spell at Elland Road. The latter made two appearances in Casilla’s absence in which he has kept two clean sheets.
Whilst a permanent deal for Meslier is not out of the question, reports of late have linked the Yorkshire club with a move for former England and Manchester City number one Joe Hart, who was previously England’s first choice ‘keeper but has struggled for game-time at Burnley. Indeed, he has failed to make a single Premier League appearance for Sean Dyche’s side and his contract will expire this summer.
Football Insider revealed that the Shrewsbury-born keeper would be pleased to hold talks with Leeds if that opportunity presented itself, although Hay is unconvinced that will happen, claiming that an ‘unnamed’ goalkeeper is interested in joining the club.
‘Unnamed’ sounds quite interesting but Leeds fans would probably be better off not trying to guess who it could be as it may well be anyone outside the top four sides in the Premier League.
Would Hart be a good addition? Question marks remain on what qualities he still has and what impact he can make in the Premier League and, with little playing time over the last few years, it may be for the best if he is not the ‘unnamed’ goalkeeper in question.
