Leeds United need to be more solid at the back if they’re to either gain promotion or stay up in the Premier League next season. So, perhaps Marcelo Bielsa has found his man to make that happen in Yoann Barbet.
The Whites have looked shaky at the back this season, and that’s probably due to the large spaces they have to defend in considering Bielsa’s attacking style. Clearly, Pontus Jansson needs a partner and Brentford’s Frenchman would fit in perfectly.
He’s played 32 times in the Championship this season, racking up 2,693 minutes. His side may be in the bottom half of the table, but his solidity at the back has impressed Leeds, according to a report in L’equipe. He’s a brick wall and that’s exactly what the Whites need.
Jansson is right-footed, whereas Barbet is left-footed and that’s always the sign of an efficient partnership. It’ll help when Leeds are passing the ball between the back line into the engine room and should mean they get caught in possession much less.
The 25-year-old’s contract runs out in summer and so he’ll be available on a free. That means it’s a risk-free transfer for Leeds and his age means they could get a solid five years out of him if all works out well. It’s all sounding very positive, isn’t it?
If Leeds are to survive in the Premier League or reach their goal of promotion next season, they’ll need to sure themselves up in defence. Barbet would give Jansson a partner he can trust and that’ll be invaluable next season.
