It wasn’t the finest way to finish the Sky Bet Championship from Leeds United. Falling short in a 3-2 loss against an already relegated Ipswich Town isn’t the way you want to enter what will be a hard fought play-off tie against Derby later today.
Marcelo Bielsa witnessed his side show what truly was a calamitous performance, and after losing to an already relegated side just enjoying their final day in the Championship, it must weigh on his mind as to who can actually handle the pressure that the play-offs will bring.
With that in mind, here are a couple of changes the Argentine should look to make.
Drop Jack Harrison
Yet again, another game that has just passed Jack Harrison by. The 22-year-old has really struggled these past few weeks and last week’s game against Ipswich just put the icing on what is already a bad cake.
The Englishman has endured a long season that really hasn’t set the world alight as he, the fans and especially Bielsa would have liked to have seen. Seeing a drop to the bench for the first leg of the tie may just be what Harrison needs in order to fix up and prove in the second leg that he can in fact help Leeds climb to the promised land.
Start Jamie Shackleton
Having been on the bench for the last nine games, there is no doubting that Jamie Shackleton will be itching to get back into the starting line up and prove again why he deserves a starting place under Bielsa.
The 19-year-old, who is valued at £450k (as per Transfermarkt), will be looking at the game later today as a chance to show Bielsa that he is the future of Leeds’ midfield, and after providing two assists from only three starts all season, the future is looking bright for the young Englishman.
With the harsh reality of the play-offs, Bielsa will be aware that there is a chance his side may not reach the pinnacle of English football, meaning the opportunity for the likes of Shackleton are all the more important as next season may be the time for the young talent to start more often.
