Profit Players: Mateusz Klich

After such a promising season under Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds have fallen short in the race for automatic promotion. Disappointing, indeed, but Leeds’ fans would most certainly have taken third place at the start of the season. They now take on Derby in an intriguing play-off semi-final. They will need their key players to perform if they are to progress – one of them being midfielder Mateusz Klich, who has been so vital to their success throughout the season.

Klich arrived at Leeds in 2017, a £1.53m (as per TransferMarkt) signing from FC Twente. After a January loan deal to FC Utrecht, Klich returned to Elland Road ready to take part in the Bielsa revolution. The midfielder has certainly not disappointed. Playing in every single league game this season, Klich contributed ten goals and nine assists. A fine return for a midfielder of any cost, let alone one that cost as little as he did.

Regardless of whether Leeds prevail in their mission for a Premier League return, Klich will certainly go down as a phenomenal purchase. The 28-year-old will undoubtedly receive interest from an array of clubs, but they will be confident of retaining his services. The Polish international scored in the first game of the season at Elland Road, as well as the last away game of the season. In between, he has been nothing short of sensational. Capable from a goal from any distance or angle, Klich was awarded with Leeds’ goal of the season award for his strike against Aston Villa. It’s fair to say, he has truly taken the Championship by storm.

After a vastly disappointing first season in England in which he managed only five league appearances, the Polish midfielder has now emerged as one of the Championship’s best players. If Klich were to leave in the summer, it would certainly be for substantially more than his initial transfer fee. With that in mind, his transfer must be regarded as nothing less than an absolute bargain. What a signing.

What do you think Leeds fans? How much of a priority is it to keep the midfielder? Did you expect Klich to show this kind of form? Comment below.
