Profit Players: Ronaldo Vieira

Leeds United supporters have been pretty happy in recent times after seeing their team head into the current two-week break for internationals sat at the top of the Championship table.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men were tipped by several during the summer to be challenging for promotion this season following the appointment of the highly-rated Argentine, and they have made a fast start to suggest that they could well be up there come May. The Yorkshire heavyweights have won four and drawn the other two of their six league games, with victories over Stoke City, Derby County, Rotherham United, and Norwich City intertwined with draws against Swansea City and Middlesbrough to propel the Whites to top spot.

As such, there have been many delighted Leeds fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have used the fortnight’s interruption to look back at their team’s summer business, which saw quite an overhaul of the playing squad at Elland Road.

And one departure which certainly raised a few eyebrows among Leeds fans was that of Ronaldo Vieira, who secured a £5.85 million move (as per Transfermarkt) to Italian club Sampdoria.

And while it was something of a questionable and ultimately unpopular decision by the Whites hierarchy, the departure of Vieira, in which they made £5.85 million profit, has paved the way for Mateusz Klich to produce the goods in the middle, and thus have many Leeds fans forgetting about the 20-year-old.

Ultimately, midfielder Vieira was set for big things at Elland Road having been a regular feature in the Leeds side in the previous two seasons, going on to make 71 appearances for the club and netting two goals in the process.

And at the tender age of 20, it seemed as though the England Under-21 international was destined to go on and become a key cog in Bielsa’s Leeds team this term, only for the club to surprisingly sanction his departure to Fiorentina.

And while that at the time was quite an unpopular move by Andrea Radrizzani and the club’s hierarchy, despite the owner’s plea to supporters that it was needed to fund further investment, it may have turned out to be a masterstroke as Poland international Klich has since come of age at Elland Road.

The 28-year-old made the move to Yorkshire last summer but struggled to make a meaningful impact under former head coach Thomas Christiansen, to the point that he was shipped out on loan to FC Utrecht back in January of this year.

Yet upon return to Leeds during the summer, and having seen fellow midfielder Vieira make the move to Italy, Klich has flourished in netting three goals and laying on one assist in six Championship matches, in turn becoming a vital part of Bielsa’s team.

Arguably, Leeds fans wouldn’t have seen the best of Klich were Vieira still at the club, and given the Polish star has already scored more this season than the 20-year-old managed throughout his Leeds career, letting him go doesn’t seem as bad a decision as was originally thought.

In fact, in making a £5.85 million profit on Vieira, what with the midfielder coming up through the youth ranks, Leeds may well have pulled off something of a masterstroke in sanctioning his departure during the summer.
