According to a recent report from The Leicester Mercury, Hamza Choudhury could be set for a move away in the January transfer window. The young midfielder currently plays his football at Premier League outfit Leicester City having come up through the youth ranks at the King Power Stadium, although a lack of regular game time under Claude Puel this season has called his short-term future at the club into question.
And reports suggest that Puel may seek to allow the 21-year-old out on loan in the January transfer window in a bid for more first team football, which is news that should be of keen interest to Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa, as he seeks to add further quality and depth to his promotion-chasing squad.
Ultimately, the Whites have got themselves into a great position to earn promotion back to the Premier League this season given they sit top of the Championship table after 22 matches of the campaign, with the appointment of Bielsa certainly reaping the rewards at present.
Yet some Leeds fans will be wary of past failings instead of getting ahead of themselves this season, as the Yorkshire giants have twice got themselves into a similarly healthy position in the last two campaigns, only to fall away from promotion contention as the season wore on, eventually finishing seventh under Garry Monk and 13th last term under Paul Heckingbottom.
And the club’s lack of squad depth was arguably a contributing factor to their demise in those two campaigns, and that could again be a problem this time round given Bielsa didn’t strengthen hugely during the summer transfer window, yet let plenty of squad players go either permanently or on loan.
And further reinforcements in the engine room in the middle of the park would surely strengthen the Whites’ promotion bid in 2019, which is why a raid on Leicester for Choudhury makes complete sense in the New Year.
The 21-year-old may have only appeared 11 times in the first team for Leicester in recent years but plenty of those appearances have yielded impressive displays, not least his dominant and commanding effort in their Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday night.
The England Under-21 international was everywhere to try and break play up and thus thwart the Citizens through the middle – he was arguably the Foxes’ best player in what turned out to be a disappointing night for Puel’s men.
And while he has had previous loan spells away from the King Power Stadium, both of which at Burton Albion in seasons gone by, one senses that first team football isn’t a given at Leicester between now and the end of the campaign – yet it’s clear that he has the ability to deliver when called upon at senior level.
And those battling qualities and overall tenacity in the middle of the park would surely benefit a Leeds side eyeing up promotion in the second half of the season – one can never have too many accomplished options in the middle of the park, especially as the campaign ramps up with three games a week the norm after Christmas.
And with Puel seemingly willing to let Choudhury leave the club temporarily next month, Bielsa’s Leeds must ask the question in a move which would seriously strengthen the squad at Elland Road.
