Leeds United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are sincerely hoping that their club make important signings during the summer transfer window in a bid to sustain a Championship promotion bid next season.
The Yorkshire giants made a fine start to the 2017/18 campaign and were very much in contention back in November, only for things to go wrong for the Whites in the succeeding months, eventually resulting in Thomas Christiansen’s departure. Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom was appointed his successor, but he failed to inspire a promotion push with Leeds eventually ending up 13th in the Championship table, a hefty 15 points adrift of the play-off positions.
As such, our resident Leeds fans are really hoping that signings can be made this summer to bolster the squad, and as such they are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking Newcastle United with a move for goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
And that’s because these reports should trigger the Yorkshire heavyweights into making a move for £4.05 million-rated Magpies star Karl Darlow (as per Transfermarkt), who is likely to suffer from Mendy’s possible arrival.
Ultimately, the 27-year-old has found himself out of favour at St James’ Park ever since Martin Dubravka was signed back in the winter window, with Darlow having been on the substitute’s bench in each of their final 12 Premier League matches.
As such, he is already struggling for regular football, so the addition of another goalkeeper in Mendy, alongside the likely permanent deal for Dubravka, is only going to serve to push him even further down the pecking order, and potentially out of the club altogether.
And that is why these recent reports must prompt Leeds into action.
The 27-year-old has proven over the years to be a very adept goalkeeper at Championship level, with Darlow the man Rafa Benitez trusted to do the job in his title-winning side back in 2017.
Add in three seasons between the sticks at Nottingham Forest, and the Englishman has accumulated much second tier experience over the years, and could thus go some way to solving Leeds’ evident goalkeeper concerns.
Ultimately, neither Felix Wiedwald nor Andy Lonergan did anything in the 2017/18 season to convince of their abilities between the sticks, with the former dropped by both Christiansen and Heckingbottom to underline his struggles.
In fact, it left young shot-stopper Bailey Peacock-Farrell as the main man in the final few games of the season, and although the 21-year-old did well for the most part, there are some doubts over his season-long credentials.
No such doubts are had regarding Darlow’s ability though, and with Newcastle seemingly eyeing reinforcements in the goalkeeping department, Leeds should seek to take advantage by making a move for the 27-year-old this summer.
