According to a recent report from The Liverpool Echo, Everton manager Marco Silva is seeking to trim his squad this summer. The 40-year-old took over at the Premier League outfit back in May following the sacking of Sam Allardyce, although he has yet to make any significant changes to the Toffees squad, with Richarlison the only incoming earlier this week, while there have been just a few departures from the first team squad.
Yet it appears that the former Hull City and Watford boss is indeed seeking to reduce numbers this summer, which should be of interest to Leeds United and head coach Marcelo Bielsa, who as such should be triggered into a move for £7.2 million-rated Everton star Nikola Vlasic (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, 20-year-old Vlasic looks set to struggle to command regular football under Silva this season following the arrival of winger Richarlison, thus adding to the likes of Theo Walcott, Yannick Bolasie, and Ademola Lookman in that particular department.
Add in the fact that Kevin Mirallas remains at Goodison Park, and the Croatia international is highly unlikely to feature in Silva’s side on a regular basis this term, and as such he could be one of the players the Everton boss is referring to with regards to trimming his squad.
But one mustn’t forget that Vlasic actually played a fair amount for the Toffees last season, not least in the autumn in appearing in all six of their Europa League group stage matches, as well as seven Premier League matches before the turn of the year.
In fact, the 20-year-old was one of the club’s most impressive performers in an otherwise disastrous first few months of the season, which is why it was somewhat of a surprise that he managed just five Premier League appearances in 2018.
Nonetheless, given Vlasic is unlikely to feature for the Toffees regularly this term, alongside the fact that Silva wants to reduce his numbers, Leeds should seek to make a move in a bid to bolster their own squad for the coming Championship campaign.
There was huge amounts of optimism among Leeds supporters earlier in the summer following the appointment of the highly-rated Bielsa, although that positivity has somewhat subsided in recent weeks given their lack of activity in the transfer market.
And given they tailed off last season after a promising start to the campaign, it’s clear that reinforcements are needed during the close season if Bielsa is to indeed oversee a promotion push – Vlasic’s arrival would bolster the attacking ranks.
The Croatian star showed glimpses of promise in his first season in English football to suggest that he could be an asset to the Whites this term, and given the long, hard slog that is a Championship campaign, strength in depth is needed in all areas of the squad.
Thus, with Silva reportedly seeking to trim his squad, Leeds must take advantage by making a move for 20-year-old Vlasic.
