Statement of intent: Leeds would take some stopping if they seal deal for £10.8m-rated ace

According to a report from The Northern Echo, Middlesbrough could be tempted into selling striker Britt Assombalonga this summer. The 25-year-old only made the move to the Riverside Stadium last summer after impressing at fellow Championship side Nottingham Forest, and even though he netted 15 goals in 44 league games for Tony Pulis’ men last time round, his short stay on Teesside could be coming to an end.

And with Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds showing genuine ambition and thus hoping to sustain a promotion push this season, the Whites should show a serious statement of intent by making a move for the £10.8 million-rated goal machine (as per Transfermarkt).

The Breakdown

Ultimately, while the Yorkshire giants were not the lowest goal-scorers in the Championship last season, just two men in Kemar Roofe and Pierre Michel Lasogga reached double figures for the club to suggest that further reinforcements are needed in that area of the pitch, especially given the latter was only on loan.

And there aren’t many better Championship strikers out there than 25-year-old Assombalonga, who has time and again produced the goods at second tier level to underline his goal-scoring credentials.

The former Watford forward has scored at least 14 goals in all three of his full seasons at Championship level having netted 15 for Forest back in the 2014/15 campaign, 14 two years later, and then 15 last time round for Pulis’ promotion-seeking Boro.

Yes, there are some concerns among our resident Leeds fans that Assombalonga has struggled with injury in recent times, being restricted to just four Championship appearances in the 2015/16 season, but after an injury-free campaign last term, it’s plausible that he is over those particular problems.

And with a goal-scoring record to match, any side in the second tier would surely express an interest in the 25-year-old, as he has the record to help pretty much every side in the division in their quest to achieve their respective aims this term.

And given the optimism and expectation surrounding Elland Road following the appointment of the highly-rated Bielsa, alongside the addition of the talented Lewis Baker on loan, Leeds fans are very much anticipating a promotion push this term – Assombalonga’s arrival would aid with that quest.

So not only would landing the striker be a huge statement of intent from the Yorkshire giants, it would also significantly strengthen a Leeds side that would thus take some stopping in the second tier this term.
