It has been quite a week to be a Leeds United supporter, hasn’t it?
After rumours continued to swirl around Marcelo Bielsa and his future at the club, the Argentine finally agreed to a one-year extension to his current deal which will keep him at Elland Road until 2020.
The news would have brought joy to the vast majority of the Whites’ fanbase as, under the guidance of the 63-year-old, the Yorkshire-based outfit have been completely transformed and were unlucky not to secure promotion last season.
With the margins in the Championship being incredibly tight, Bielsa will know that if he can get his recruitment right this summer, he could be setting his side up for success and so it is of little surprise that he has already been linked with a move for one of Britain’s most exciting young prospects.
If Bielsa can convince the Reds to agree to a deal, he will be securing the services of a winger who set the Championship alight during the 2018/19 campaign whilst at Derby County and is seemingly destined for stardom.
Keeping this rumour in mind, let’s compare Wilson with one of Leeds’ current midfield aces…
Despite arriving at Pride Park last year with a fair share of buzz around him, not many would have been able to predict just how big of an impact Harry Wilson would have on Derby’s fortunes.
Immense from the very outset, the 22-year-old helped propel the Rams to a sixth-place finish in the second tier by firing in 15 goals whilst also providing three assists.
Although he would be powerless to stop Aston Villa from prevailing in the play-off final earlier this week, without Wilson’s stunning display against Leeds in the semi-final second leg, it could be argued that Derby would have been eliminated from the competition.
Having already demonstrated that he is capable of delivering on a consistent basis in the Championship, it would undoubtedly be somewhat of a transfer coup if Leeds can bring the Wales international to Elland Road this summer.
TT GRADE: A
Arguably Leeds’ best player last season, Pablo Hernandez was one of many who thrived under the guidance of Bielsa as the Argentine allowed him to take his game to new heights.
A menace throughout the year, the Spaniard was directly involved in 24 goals for the Whites as they finished in their highest league position (third) for 15 years.
However, with Leeds needing to overcome Derby in the play-offs, Hernandez was uncharacteristically poor in both legs of the semi-final which undoubtedly played a role in his side crashing out of the competition.
Whereas there is no doubting the winger’s talent, when you consider that he is very much in the twilight of his career at the age of 34, it is fair to say that he is not a player who Bielsa can build a team around for the coming years.
TT GRADE: A-
Although Pablo Hernandez has been playing some of the best football of his career in recent times, if Harry Wilson does indeed become available during the upcoming transfer window, Bielsa must do everything he can to sign the winger.
With the world at his feet, the £7.2m rated ace (via Transfermarkt) could prove to be the final piece in the jigsaw which allows Leeds to realise their Premier League dream in 2020.
