Derby County currently find themselves fighting for a play-off place under Frank Lampard, while Leeds United are sitting pretty at the top of the Championship table.
The Rams will be desperate to cement a play-off place as the season progresses, with the chance to secure promotion to the Premier League at the first time of asking under Lampard. Meanwhile, the Whites will be focused on maintaining their lead at the top of the tree, having defied expectations up until this point.
Of course, the recent ‘spygate’ incident caused a lot of controversy, with Lampard less than happy with the actions of Marcelo Bielsa. So, we took a look at the rise and fall of two Chelsea youngsters who both secured Championship moves to Derby and Leeds United respectively back in the summer, Mason Mount and Lewis Baker.
With that in mind, let’s compare these two transfers…
Frank Lampard secured Mason Mount on a season-long loan from Chelsea back in the summer transfer window, and it’s safe to say that this has proved to be an incredible signing for the Rams.
The promising Englishman has established himself as one of the standout performers in the Championship this season, with an impressive six goals and three assists to his name.
Indeed, the 20-year-old has all the ingredients to become a future star of the game, both on the international stage and domestically, and he will no doubt have a huge part to play in Derby County’s promotion push from here on in.
TT GRADE: A
Marcelo Bielsa secured the services of Lewis Baker from Chelsea on a season-long loan back in the summer months.
However, the attack-minded midfielder was recalled by his parent club Chelsea earlier on this month, and has since been sent out on loan to Championship side Reading for the second half of the season.
It’s safe to say that the Englishman proved to be Marcelo Bielsa’s worst summer signing as he showed very little ability and didn’t look fit to lace his own boots in the Championship. He certainly won’t be remembered anytime soon at Elland Road, having contributed to some of their worst performances in the current campaign.
TT GRADE: C
When comparing these two, it’s safe to say that Mason Mount is the Chelsea man making all the headlines in the current campaign, while Lewis Baker is still trying to find his feet in the Championship.
The Derby County man has proved to be one of the Rams’ best signings in years gone by and could even make himself a hero if he helps secure promotion.
On the other hand, Baker just hasn’t got going in the Championship and seriously needs to seek improvements to avoid possibly even dropping down to the standard of a lower league.
Both players are currently at opposite ends of the spectrum in the Championship, but it’s Lampard who will be having the last laugh as Bielsa settled for a second-hand Mount in the form of Baker back in the summer window.
