TT Introduces: Leeds United’s supremely talented Oriol Rey

Leeds United supporters are surely growing increasingly excited about the 2018/19 Championship season, what with the highly-rated Marcelo Bielsa to lead them into the campaign.

The former Argentina and Chile manager takes over at Elland Road from the sacked Paul Heckingbottom, what with the Englishman relieved of his duties last month having won just four of his 16 matches in charge. Yet last season’s underwhelming campaign has already been forgotten by our resident Leeds fans, who are supremely optimistic about their side’s chances this term following the appointment of Bielsa, who they hope can finally take them back to the Premier League.

Thus, there are many excited and indeed expectant Leeds fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are wondering who in the club’s Under-18 and Under-23 squads could break through under the new manager this season.

And there is one individual in particular many feel has a chance of doing just that, namely 20-year-old sensation Oriol Rey.

The young midfielder only made the move to Elland Road 12 months ago from Spanish giants Barcelona, yet he underlined his supreme qualities and huge potential for the development squad at the Yorkshire outfit last season.

The 20-year-old played 30 times for the Under-23s last season and netted twice in the process, and while he failed to make a matchday squad for the senior team last season, he did go on their well-documented post-season tour of Myanmar back in May.

And with ability to play in midfield and indeed in the heart of the backline, the Spanish sensation could prove to be an asset for Bielsa both this term and indeed in the future, while the fact he has penned a new deal suggests how highly thought-of he is at Elland Road.

And with things seemingly looking up at Leeds under Bielsa, there could be opportunities for some of the club’s brightest talent to make the step up next term, with 20-year-old Rey seemingly the most likely to do just that this season.
