Unsung Hero: Leeds United’s Ben White goes under the radar in draw with Brentford

Unsung Hero: Leeds United’s Ben White goes under the radar in draw with Brentford - Leeds United

Leeds United put in an improved performance as they drew 1-1 away to promotion rivals Brentford, with one player perhaps going under the radar with his display.

Thomas Frank’s side were gifted the lead when Kiko Casilla miscontrolled a back pass from Liam Cooper, allowing Said Benrahma to tap in from close range (via BBC). However, the club captain then stabbed home an equaliser after Jack Harrison whipped in a corner with which David Raya failed to deal.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men proved to be the dominant side throughout the match and pressed for the winner with Helder Costa wasting a glorious opportunity to win it in the second half as he shot weakly into the grasp of Raya.

Statistically, Leeds’ best player was their midfield enforcer Kalvin Phillips, who proved to be head and shoulders above the rest of his teammates. The 24-year-old played the joint-most key passes (1), attempted the third-most crosses (6), made the joint-second most tackles (2) and had the highest pass accuracy of any player to start the game (86.8%) as he performed well at both ends of the pitch (via WhoScored).

However, it was Ben White who was the unsung hero for the Elland Road side as he performed valiantly in defence. The 22-year-old made the most clearances (4), the second-most interceptions (4) and won the joint-most aerial duels (3) as he put in a superb performance at the back. His opponent Ollie Watkins proved to be anonymous during the fixture as he had no shots on goal and played just one key pass as the centre-half did his bit to keep the Championship’s joint-top scorer quiey.

Leeds Live agreed with this assessment as they gave the on-loan Brighton and Hove Albion defender a seven out of 10, commenting on his battle with the 24-year-old forward by saying: “Passing not always hitting its mark, but White was steady. Ollie Watkins, the joint-leading scorer in the league, was quiet.” (Source: Leeds Live)
