Luke Ayling produced a solid display in Leeds United’s latest Championship fixture against Sheffield Wednesday. We have taken a closer look at his performance against the Owls in the latest edition of our Unsung Hero feature.
Leeds United were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday (via BBC Sport).
It was a result which kept both firmly in the promotion picture, with Leeds now sat in third place in the Championship table, just two points adrift of leaders West Brom (BBC Sport).
Whilst they struggled going forward, the Leeds backline did once again produce a solid performance, and Luke Ayling was a key figure in helping Marcelo Bielsa’s side keep a clean sheet.
The 28-year-old was outstanding at Hillsborough, and his individual match statistics make for positive reading for Leeds fans.
In the 90 minutes the former Arsenal trainee made three clearances, two successful tackles and one interception, whilst also blocking one shot and winning four aerial duels (via WhoScored).
He also played two accurate long balls and completed two successful dribbles, and ultimately finished with an impressive match rating of 7.48, the second highest of any Leeds player only behind Kiko Casilla (via WhoScored).
Ayling missed the start of the season through injury, but he has returned to the fold for Leeds’ last five Championship fixtures (via Transfermarkt).
He is one of their most experienced defenders and has helped them to three clean sheets already (Transfermarkt).
His return is certainly a major boost for the West Yorkshire side. He was a key player for them last season making 38 Championship appearances (Transfermarkt), and it looks as though he will be a regular for Bielsa again this season having broken back into the starting 11.
