This article forms part of our What Does The Future Hold series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at what potentially lies ahead for a player, manager or club.
Kalvin Phillips is undoubtedly a Leeds United player who manager Marcelo Bielsa simply cannot live without right now.
As stats show, Phillips is offering plenty in defence and attack for his side. According to WhoScored, the 24-year-old is winning 2.8 tackles per league game, the highest average in the squad, and making just under two key passes.
It is no wonder that he has come in for such huge praise in the current campaign, with talkSPORT‘s Adrian Durham claiming back in January that Phillips is the player that Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka “dreams of being”.
“In terms of midfield, there was a midfielder for Leeds who outshone everybody,” Durham said following the Whites’ FA Cup defeat to Mikel Arteta’s men at the start of the year. “It’s the player Granit Xhaka probably dreams of being!
“I think he could play for England as well. I don’t think there is any doubt.”
Can Leeds United keep hold of Kalvin Phillips?
Firmly in the spotlight now, some Leeds fans may begin to worry about his future at the club. According to Football Insider, Wolves already have their sights set on the player ahead of a potential summer transfer.
All hope is not lost, though. Should Bielsa’s side win promotion, which they have a great chance of doing given their current standing in the table, once the season resumes, it is easy to imagine Phillips remaining at Elland Road for at least another year.
He would be playing in English football’s top division with his boyhood club, an absolute dream for most. As well as that, Leeds would be under no pressure to sell. The Premier League television deal would make them a much richer outfit, while Phillips also has a contract until 2024.
So if the Whites can bag promotion, expect Phillips to give the club another season or two.
