He’s performed remarkably under Marcelo Bielsa, hasn’t he? Kalvin Phillips has been relatively consistent ever since emerging in the first-team at Leeds United four years ago. However, since being moved deeper into a holding midfield role, he has taken his game to the next level.
Phillips has started all but four games across all competitions this season, with three of the absences being due to the red card suspension from the Nottingham Forest defeat on New Year’s Day. He has been a mainstay in the side though when available and it is easy to see why.
Bielsa clearly holds Phillips in very high regard and his importance in the side cannot be underestimated, having filled in at centre-back when called upon and performing his job in the ‘number 6’ role, very well.
At just 23 years of age, he still has a lot to learn and he can mature further as well as continue to improve under Bielsa, that poses the question, what is next for Phillips?
If United do get promoted as they have regained such a promising position in the Championship to do so, Phillips will be a key member of that side who will try and sustain their status as a Premier League outfit. If United were to establish themselves as a top tier side, Phillips will surely be at the forefront of that for years to come.
If they do not succeed this year, Phillips, who is valued at £6.3 million (by Transfermarkt), is likely to give it another shot or two. But, if United cannot get promoted in the coming years, it would come as no surprise to see Phillips want to live his prime years in the top division of English football.
With such a side though, promotion to the Premier League is more than achievable either this season or next.
